Frances Kleiner was born in Brooklyn in 1926. She came from an active left-wing family, with ties in both religious and cultural Jewish life. Fran attended the City College of New York at the age of sixteen, where she met her husband Bob. After obtaining her Master’s in social work from Boston University, Fran and Bob moved from Boston to Philadelphia in 1953. The two resided in Strawberry Mansion, where Fran worked at a Jewish organization on the same block where they lived. She has held several jobs in the Jewish community from teaching Sunday school to directing a senior center. Fran continues to spread the culture of her first language, Yiddish, through song and storytelling, and through the Sholem Aleichem Club in Philadelphia.
